Devlog 4

Welcome to another Dance Monkey Dance devlog.

The main things added to Dance Monkey Dance in this devlog is the addition of more enemies and waves.

In order to provide some variety in the types of enemies that Dance Monkey Dance has, 2 new enemy types have been added. An exploding enemy and a tanky enemy.

The first as show below, is the exploding enemy. As you can see, when the player is a safe distance away from them, they have a yellow trim, but as the player gets closer, the trim changes colour to red, signaling that the player is in close proximity to the exploding enemy. If the player proceeds to get closer, it then explodes and displays an explosion effect.

Exploding Enemy

The second enemy added is the tanky enemy. As you can see from the GIF below, it has quite a large, blocky appearance which warns the player that this enemy will be more difficult to defeat. You can also see a blue shield circulating around the model which further adds to the tanky aesthetic of this enemy. The goal with this enemy is to have bits of its armour, (the cubes surrounding the core) fall off as it gets damaged. At the moment, they do not do this, but it will be added in the future.

Tanky Enemy

Currently neither of the enemies moves or does damage to the player. However, as we already have enemies that move and do damage to the player, it will be a straightforward task to adapt the scripts used for the new enemies.

In addition to the new enemies, we now have waves. So that when the game starts, a wave of enemies spawn, they will then proceeds to attack the player. After a certain amount of time has passed, a new wave of enemies will spawn. This will continue on until the player’s inevitable defeat.

Another element that was added this week was a stop sign which appears when the player approaches the boundary of the world. Instead of having an invisible wall which is what we started with, there is now a visual indicator that the player wont be able to proceed any further in that direction.

That all for this devlog. Tune in  for more development news in the next devlog.
